NCR Metro Star tanker bags 7 golds, breaks 2018 Palaro record

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — Golden streak.

Dominating the pool with unmatched prowess, the NCR Metro Stars celebrated a stellar performance from one of their youngest standouts, as swimmer Sophia Rose Garra captured seven gold medals and shattered a Palaro record during the elementary swimming events held at the Marcos Memorial (FEMM) Stadium from May 26 to 29.

Malabon City-based Garra emerged as a breakout athlete, topping the podium in the 100m Backstroke, 200m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 4×50 Medley Relay, 100m Freestyle, and the 200m Individual Medley.

She made waves particularly in the 200-meter Individual Medley, clocking in at 2:31.41 minutes — a time that broke the 2018 record set by fellow NCR swimmer Michaela Jasmine Mojdeh.

In a post-race interview, Garra shared that following her CH qualifying event, she and her team committed to daily training at the New Clark Aquatic Center to prepare for this year’s national games.

She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to her coach, Richard Odchigue, saying her success would not have been possible without his unwavering guidance and support. | via Martin Paul Sibayan / City of Mandaluyong Science High School
